Chickweed
Parts used: Leaf
Primary Uses: Acute Sore Throat, Bruises, Bruising Easily, Boils
Caution: None noted
Benefits: Chickweed is found almost in everyone’s backyards. It is made into a poultice for bruises, boils, psoriasis, and eczema. In the spring chickweed is a great addition to salads and was formerly used for its Vitamin C content. Used as a tea, chickweed helps get rid of phlegm in the lungs and soothes sore throats. It is believed to help lose weight. There is little evidence to support this use. It does have the ability to activate a very mild thyroid or increase metabolic rate. The herb is useless in commercial products because of the drying process. To make use of this herb it is best eaten fresh in quantity in salads.
